Moroccan Tagine

A tagine is a unique type of ceramic or clay cookware that's popular in North Africa. The bottom is a wide, circular shallow dish used for both cooking and serving, while the top of the tagine is distinctively shaped into a rounded dome or cone.

The word "tagine" also refers to the succulent dish which is slow-cooked inside the cooking vessel. Typically, a tagine is a rich stew of meat, chicken, or fish, and most often includes vegetables or fruit. Vegetables can also be cooked alone.

Tagines are primarily used to slow-cook savoury stews and vegetable dishes. Because the domed or cone-shaped lid of the tagine traps steam and returns the condensed liquid to the pot, a minimal amount of water is needed to cook meats and vegetables to buttery-tenderness. This method of cooking is very practical in areas where water supplies are limited or where public water is not yet available.

The traditional method of cooking with a tagine is to place the tagine over coals. Large bricks of charcoal are purchased specifically for their ability to stay hot for hours. Smaller pieces of charcoal are reserved for cooking brochettes and other grilled meat.

Domino's Pizza

Domino’s Pizza is the second largest franchised pizza chain in the U.S.A., and the history of Domino’s Pizza is similar to its rival Pizza hut; two brothers started it with borrowed equity in the sixties. Tom and James Monaghan bought a small Michigan Pizzeria called Dominick's, which was jointly run by them until James traded his share for a second hand car. Tom revitalized the image by changing the name to Domino’s Pizza .
By the late seventies there were over 200 franchise pizza businesses in the States and Domino’s Pizza was ready to go International. In 1983 Domino’s Pizza opened its doors in Winnipeg, and in the same year opened its one thousandth store. Later that same year Domino's corporate history was to begin in Australia with its first franchise in Brisbane, on the East coast.
The locations for Domino’s Pizza grew quickly from here as they sprung up in all sorts of diverse places including Bogotá. Despite Domino's Pizza springing up diverse locations, they were still a very traditional company. Domino's Pizza menu had been kept very simple and streamlined; they only sold one type of pizza crust which they named the regular pizza. Domino's Pizza dough was shaped by tossing the dough and pulling it into shape. The pizza menu included just two sizes of dough, it was not until much later that competition forced them to add a medium and extra-large sized pizza. There were no such things as side orders you could have Pizza, pizza or Pizza and you could only drink a Coke with it.
In 1989 the history of Domino's Pizza was to change when the Deep Pan pizza was introduced, for the first time in twenty five years the company was being forced to react to market demand. This move consolidated the financial base and ensured the growth of Domino's Pizza , as the same year they opened their five thousandth store.
The wind of change had started and by 1992 they were to introduce the first non-pizza item to their menu, this was obviously a reluctant move as it was bread sticks. Domino Pizza dough was already on hand and the making of bread sticks is not so different.
For many years the company had advertised that if the delivery of their pizzas took longer than thirty minutes then the pizza would be delivered free. This was parodied by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie which specified the "pizza dude has 30 seconds" to complete the delivery. The turtles pizza was late and they received a refund of $3 for "being two minutes late, dude!" However the benefits to Domino Pizza was enormous as millions of kids were to hear the name of Domino Pizza endorsed on celluloid. In 1993 Domino Pizza discontinued this policy and stated that if a customer was unhappy they could have a new pizza or a refund.
By 1994 Domino’s Pizza marketing policy widened as chicken wings were introduced to the menu. At the same time the company hit the African continent as they opened a store in Egypt . By 1996 Domino’s Pizza website was launched and the company declared global sales of nearly $3 billion.
Despite their reluctance to add a wider range menu they have as a company given the pizza industry many innovations that have now become standard. The belt driven pizza oven was the invention of Domino Pizza and they began using corrugated cardboard delivery boxes which were very effective at holding the heat within the pizza during the delivery time. Ever mindful of the fact that a cold pizza must be about the worst dining experience on earth Domino’s pizza introduced the "Heat Wave," a portable electrical bag system that keeps the pizza hot during delivery.
By 1997 they had also had an internal modern facelift as their stores were all brightened up and the company introduced a new logo. Domino Pizza continued to grow exponentially and in 1997 they opened seven stores in one day but on 5 different continents.
In 2004, Super Bowl Sunday was the most hectic pizza delivery day of the year when Domino’s Pizza sold over a million pizzas, which was an increase of 42 percent on their normal Sunday trading volume. As the company continues to grow so rapidly it is just as well the practice of adding a dot onto the logo was discontinued after three outlets as Domino’s Pizza now has over seven thousand outlets globally.

Woman Dies Over Too Much Coke.

Experts have concluded that a New Zealand woman's eight to 10 litre a day Coca-Cola habit likely caused her to suddenly collapse and die.

Natasha Harris, 30, was a stay-at-home mother of eight who was helping her children get ready for school when she collapsed slumped against a wall.

Her partner, Chris Hodgkinson, quickly called emergency services and tried to resuscitate her using mouth-to-mouth.

However, all efforts failed and she passed away in February 2010.

Medical reports state that she died of a heart attack. However, expert witnesses at an inquest testified that her 2-gallon-a-day Coca-Cola habit, combined with poor nutrition, likely lead to hypokalemia.

Hypokalemia, also known as low potassium levels, can include abnormal heart rhythms.

Pathologist Dr Dan Mornin added that the high levels of caffeine in Coke that built up to toxic levels in her body may have contributed to her death.

Hodgkinson testified that Harris would drink between 2.1 to 2.6 gallons of regular Coke every day.

She would drink a Coke when she woke up and would drink another just before she went to sleep.

He admitted she was addicted to Coke.

Reports by the Daily Mail said she would go 'crazy' if she ran out of it, becoming moody, irritable and low.

In a press statement, Coca-Cola said their products are safe.

"But grossly excessive ingestion of any food product, including water" could be harmful," the statement added.

"We believe that all foods and beverages can have a place in a balanced and sensible diet combined with an active lifestyle."

Fidel Castro

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (Spanish: [fiˈðel ˈkastro]; born August 13, 1926) is a Cuban revolutionary and politician, having held the position of Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and then President from 1976 to 2008. He also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from the party's foundation in 1961 until 2011. Politically a Marxist-Leninist, under his administration the Republic of Cuba was converted into a one-party socialist state, with industry and business being nationalised under state ownership and socialist reforms implemented in all areas of society.

Born the illegitimate son of a wealthy farmer, Castro became involved in leftist anti-imperialist politics whilst studying law at the University of Havana. Subsequently involving himself in armed rebellions against right wing governments in the Dominican Republic and Colombia, he went on to conclude that the U.S.-backed Cuban President Fulgencio Batista, who was widely seen as a dictator, had to be overthrown; to this end he led a failed armed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953. Imprisoned for a year, he then traveled to Mexico, and with the aid of his brother Raúl Castro and friend Che Guevara, he assembled together a group of Cuban revolutionaries, the July 26 Movement. Returning with them to Cuba, he took a key role in the Cuban Revolution, leading a successful guerrilla war against Batista's forces, with Batista himself fleeing into exile in 1959.
Castro subsequently became Commander in Chief of the armed forces and shortly thereafter became Prime Minister. His involvement in the overthrow of Batista, as well as a suspected relationship with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, alarmed the United States, who through the CIA organised the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 to overthrow his government, before proceeding to orchestrate repeated assassination attempts against him and implement an economic blockade of Cuba. To counter this threat, Castro forged an alliance with the Soviet Union and allowed them to store nuclear weapons on the island, leading to the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Adopting Marxism-Leninism as his guiding ideology, in 1961 Castro proclaimed the socialist nature of the Cuban revolution, and in 1965 became First Secretary of the newly founded Communist Party, with all other parties being abolished. He then led the transformation of Cuba into a socialist republic, nationalising industry and introducing free universal healthcare and education, as well as suppressing internal opposition. A keen internationalist, Castro then introduced Cuban medical brigades who worked throughout the developing world, and aided a number of foreign revolutionary socialist groups in the hope of toppling world capitalism.
In 1976 he became President of the Council of State as well as of the Council of Ministers. On the international stage, he held the post of Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1979 to 1983. Following the collapse of key ally the Soviet Union in 1991, Castro led Cuba into its economic "Special Period", before then taking the country into the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas in 2006 and forging economic and political alliances with other nations in the Latin American "Pink Tide". Amidst failing health, in 2006 Castro transferred his responsibilities to Vice-President Raúl Castro, who was then elected President when Fidel stepped down in 2008.
Castro is a controversial and highly divisive world figure, being lauded as a champion of anti-imperialism, humanitarianism, environmentalism and the world's poor by his supporters, but alternately his critics have accused him of being a dictator whose authoritarian administration has overseen multiple human rights abuses. Nonetheless, he has had a significant influence on the politics of a number of other world leaders, namely Nelson Mandela, Hugo Chávez and Evo Morales, and he is widely idolised by many leftists, socialists and anti-imperialists across the world.

Titanic's Richest Passenger Built NYC Hotel.

The Versailles room at the hotel is prepared for a function. (AP)
A century after the Titanic sank, the legacy of the ship's wealthiest and most famous passenger lives on at the luxury hotel he built in New York City.

John Jacob Astor IV was one of the richest men in America when he died in 1912. Astor went down with the ship after helping his pregnant wife escape into the last lifeboat.

Astor founded the St Regis Hotel on Fifth Avenue in 1904. The expensive hotel still has butlers in black tailcoats roaming the hallways. The elaborate lobby with its fresco-ed ceiling is exactly the same.

And the thousands of leather-bound books that he collected have been preserved on the same bookshelves for 100 years.

This year the hotel paid tribute to Astor with a small dinner in his library. - AP

Indonesia Shaken With 2 Massive Earthquakes.

Massive traffic in Acheh Province, Sumatera

Two massive earthquakes triggered back-to-back tsunami warnings for Indonesia on Wednesday, sending panicked residents fleeing to high ground in cars and on the backs of motorcycles. No deadly waves or serious damage resulted, and a watch for much of the Indian Ocean was lifted after a few hours. Some people in Penang and Klang Valley in Malaysia reported feeling tremors.

People are stuck in a traffic jam as they evacuate to higher ground after a strong earthquake was felt in Banda Aceh, Aceh province, Sumatra, Indonesia, Wednesday.

Women and children cried in Aceh, where memories are still raw of a 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people in the province alone. Others screamed "God is great" as they poured from their homes or searched frantically for separated family members.

Patients were wheeled out of hospitals, some still lying in their beds with drips attached to their arms. And at least one hotel guest was slightly injured when he jumped out of his window.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first 8.6-magnitude quake was a shallow 22 kilometers, hitting in the sea 435 kilometers from Aceh's provincial capital.

An alert that followed from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii advised countries all along the rim of the Indian Ocean, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa, that a seismically charged wave could head their way.

Two deadly tsunamis in the last decade - the most recent off Japan just one year ago - have left the world much better prepared.

Sirens sounded along coastlines and warnings spread like wildfire by mobile phone text messaging. Though often chaotic, evacuations began immediately with streets clogged with traffic, especially in Aceh.

The only wave to hit, though, was less than 80 centimeters high, rolling to Indonesia's emptied coastline.
Just as the region was sighing relief, an 8.2-magnitude aftershock followed.

"We just issued another tsunami warning," Prih Harjadi, from Indonesia's geophysics agency, told TVOne in a live interview.
He told his countrymen to stay clear of western coasts.

Residents in Aceh could hardly believe it."What did we do to deserve this?" cried Aisyah Husaini, 47, who lost both her parents and a son in the 2004 tsunami. "What sins have we committed?"

"I'm so scared, I don't want to lose my family again," she said, clinging to her two children in a mosque in Banda Aceh, where hundreds of people sheltered.

Again, though, the threat quickly passed.

Experts said Wednesday's quakes did not have the potential to create massive tsunamis because the friction and shaking occurred horizontally, not vertically. The earth's tectonic plates slid against each other, creating more of a vibration in the water.

In contrast, mega-thrust quakes cause the seabed to rise or drop vertically, displacing massive amounts of water and sending towering waves racing across the ocean at jetliner speeds.

Roger Musson, seismologist at the British geological survey who has studied Sumatra's fault lines, said initially he'd been "fearing the worst."

"But as soon as I discovered what type of earthquake it was ... I felt a lot better."

The tremors were felt in neighboring Malaysia, where high-rise buildings shook, and Thailand, India and Bangladesh.

Those countries, Sri Lanka and the Maldives evacuated buildings and beaches and readied relief efforts in case of disaster.

The World Meteorological Organization said communication systems set up after the 2004 tsunami appeared to have worked well.

"Our records indicate that all the national meteorological services in the countries at risk by this tsunami have received the warnings in under five minutes," said Maryam Golnaraghi, the head of WMO's disaster risk reduction program.

The alert was sent out by U.S. National Weather Service, which operates a tsunami warning station in Hawaii, she said.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

Green Tea Could Cloud Olympic Doping Tests.

Olympic doping officials are considering whether to tweak their tests after a recent British study showed green tea might hide testosterone from the standard test used to spot it.

The study was a test in a lab dish so scientists aren't sure if the effects will be the same in people.

But some experts say the results are intriguing enough that Olympic testing could be updated to include that possibility.

"It's interesting that something as common as tea could have a significant influence on the steroid profile," said Olivier Rabin, scientific director of the World Anti-Doping Agency, or Wada. He said other foods and beverages, such as alcohol, are also known to muddle test results.

"We may need to adjust our steroid (test) to allow us to exclude whether a test is modified by food or training or disease, before we can say that it's doping," Rabin said.

He said they might have to raise their normal threshold for what is a considered a legal amount of testosterone to allow for any such interference.

Impact of Balfour Declaration

Zionists living in Britain, chief among them Chaim Weizmann, lobbied the British government for a statement in support of a Jewish National Home. In reward for Jewish support and as a result of Chaim Weizmann’s influence and diplomacy, the Balfour Declaration supported the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine as British policy, while not prejudicing competing Arab claims.

The Balfour Declaration radically changed the status of the Zionist movement. It promised support from a major world power and gave the Zionists international recognition. Zionism was transformed by the British pledge from a quixotic dream into a legitimate and achievable undertaking. For these reasons, the Balfour Declaration was widely criticized throughout the Arab world, and especially in Palestine, as contrary to the spirit of British pledges contained in the Husayn-McMahon correspondence. The wording of the document itself, although painstakingly devised, was interpreted differently by different people, according to their interests.

Ultimately, the two undertakings of the Declaration were incompatible. Although numerous compromise plans were proposed over the years, Arab interests could never accept that establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jews could be accomplished with preservation of the rights of existing non-Jewish communities, i.e., the Arabs. The incompatibility sharpened over the succeeding years and became irreconcilable.

History of the Malay Kingdom of Patani

Ibrahim Syukri
Translated by Conner Bailey and John N. Miksic
Introduction by David K. Wyatt

The Sejarah Kerajaan Melayu Patani (The History of the Malay State of Patani) is an extremely rare work, published in what was then Malaya after the Second World War, in the town of Pasir Putih, close to the Thai border. Nothing is known for certain about the pseudonymous author, Ibrahim Syukri, but it can be gathered
from his text that he was a Thai national, a Muslim, who was probably a civil servant and could read English.

It was written in the Jawi script, a variant of Arabic, not in romanized Malay, and so was intended for
a local audience. It does not pretend to be dispassionate work. It describes the great glory days of the sultanate in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, under its curiously named queens designated by difference colors, followed by its decline under a series of weak sultans, and its “reawakening.”

As Wyatt points out in hisgeneral introduction, the sultanate lasted more than a thousand years and the last ruler died in livingmemory. But the 1909 Anglo-Siamese treaty marked the formal transfer of authority to Bangkok in return for the abandoning of Siamese claims to Kedah, Kelantan, and Malay states further south.

The implementation of Thai nationalist and integrationist policies in the 1940s and 1950s led to serious problems in the three Jawi-speaking Muslim-majority southern provinces of Patani, Yala, and Narathiwat.
These problems have in recent years manifested themselves in violence, which alas at present shows no signs of abating.

The text, long unavailable, has been ably translated into English and edited by Conner Bailey and John Miksic. It forms an important addition to works on the former sultanate, and gives an insight into the feelings of the present-day inhabitants on whom history weights so heavily.

Book Review: Human Race Get Off Your Knees

David Icke marks his 20th year of uncovering astounding secrets and suppressed information with the publication of his most amazing book yet.

He takes the manipulation of the human race and the nature of reality to still new levels of understanding and he calls for humanity to rise from its knees and take back the world from the sinister network of families and non-human entities that covertly control us from cradle to grave.

David has moved the global cutting edge so many times since his incredible ‘awakening’ in 1990 and here he does it again - and then some.

His most staggering revelation is that the Earth and the collective human mind is manipulated from the Moon, which, he says, is not a ‘heavenly body’, but an artificial construct – a gigantic ‘spacecraft’ (probably a hollowed-out 'planetoid') – which is home to the extraterrestrial group that has been manipulating humanity for aeons.

He describes what he calls the ‘Moon Matrix’, a fake reality broadcast from the Moon which is decoded by the human body/mind in much the same way as portrayed in the Matrix movie trilogy. The Moon Matrix has ‘hacked’ into the human ‘body-computer’ system, he says, and it is feeding us a manipulated sense of self and the world 24/7.

We live in extraordinary times. On one side we are seeing the imposition of a global Orwellian State of total surveillance and control by those who serve the Moon Matrix, and on the other a fantastic energetic transformation is taking place – what David calls the ‘Truth Vibrations’, a phenomenon he first predicted in 1990 and used as the title of his first book after his ‘eyes opened’.

The Truth Vibrations are awakening vast numbers of people to remember who they reallyare – infinite, eternal Consciousness.

Humanity is at a fork in the road and it is time to make a choice. Are we going to awaken to our true genius and potential as Infinite Consciousness? Or are we going to remain entrapped in body/mind and the manufactured illusions of the Moon Matrix?

One choice will give us freedom and potential on a scale we could not have thought possible, while the other will condemn us and our children to a global fascist/communist dictatorship on a scale that would make George Orwell wince.

You cannot read Human Race Get Off Your Knees and be the same person you were when you picked it up. It is life-changing, reality-changing and its information, if acted upon, will set us free.

Washington Boy, 9, Writes Apology to Girl He Shot

A 9-year-old boy in Bremerton, Wash. wrote a letter apologizing to a classmate who was seriously wounded after a gun discharged from his backpack, lodging a bullet in her spine.

The handwritten letter was addressed to Amina Bowman, 8, who was released from the hospital on Tuesday. The boy's name has not been made public.

"I'm sorry I hurt you because I brought a gun to school. I did not mean for any one to get hurt," the boy wrote. "I wish everyone was okay. I made a bad choice."

Six weeks after being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, small milestones mark Amina's recovery.

A taste of soup, those first steps, and a brownie milk shake after being discharged from the hospital are all progress that her mother posts on her Facebook page.

"What a great day!!!" Teri Bowman wrote under a picture of her smiling daughter before she came home from the hospital.

On Feb. 22. Amina was shot during class at Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton.

"I made a bad choice. I was sad, scared and afraid and I did not solve my problem well," the boy told her in his letter. "I will stay away from guns."

The school was put into immediate lockdown after the incident.

MaryLou Tucker, a parent of a student at the school, said the teacher in Amina's classroom did everything she could. "She had the kids sit, get underneath their desks and then made sure that the kids were accounted for," Tucker said.

The boy's prosecution will be deferred. His mother, Jamie Lee Chaffin, and her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to ABC affiliate KOMO.

Amina's parents said she'll likely return to school in the fall.

KL bans Singapore ballet for ‘indecent’ tutus and tights

By Yow Hong Chieh

KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 — A Singaporean dance troupe has been denied a permit to perform here this weekend owing to their “indecent” costumes, a Malaysian dance organisation said today.

MyDance Alliance president Bilqis Hijjas said the decision by Puspal against the Singapore Dance Theatre performing at KLPac was “deplorable” and would hurt Malaysia’s reputation as a reliable host for cultural shows.

Puspal, or the Central Agency for the Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artists, is under the purview of the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry headed by Datuk Seri Rais Yatim.

Bilqis said Puspal had approved dances featuring classical tutus before — even at government-run theatre Istana Budaya as late as this year — and asked why the agency was “so inconsistent” in applying its guidelines.

“KLPac, by comparison, is a private business on private ground, with paying audiences who were well aware of what they were coming to see, and not one of whom would have been distressed by the costumes,” she said.

She noted that the women’s costumes featured long skirts, except for dancers in The Nutcracker, who would have worn the same short classical tutus and tights that have been used since ballet dancersperformed before the Russian tsars in the 1870s.

“Ballet dancers in Baghdad are allowed to wear ballet costumes on stage,” said Bilqis. “Are we to understand that the Malaysian public is less cosmopolitan, less morally resilient and less broad minded than the citizens of a Middle Eastern country that has been ripped to shreds by war and violence?”

Bilqis pointed out that the arts were also a business, and that Puspal’s decision would create “enormous doubt” among international investors, causing them to shun Malaysia as a venue for world-class performers.

This would lead to huge loss of revenue for the country, which contradicted the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry’s stated objective of “increasing national income through contributions from the creative and communication industries”, she added.

Bilqis said she hoped the show would be allowed to go on “with better leadership” from the ministry as it was an act that would raise its prestige as an open and consistent incubator of the arts.

In February, Puspal cancelled the permit issued to R&B singer Erykah Badu after English daily The Star ran an “offensive” image of the American artiste bearing temporary tattoos of the word “Allah” in Arabic script.

The agency could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

Quietest place on Earth mutes all sounds, messes with your head

By Mike Wehner, Tecca

If you've been to a crowded airport, sporting event, or even a kid's birthday party lately, a little peace and quiet might sound like the perfect thing to help you kick back and relax. Just don't let things get too quiet, or you might drive yourself a wee bit insane: the anechoic chamber at Orfield Laboratories in Minnesota can mute 99.99% of all sound, but visiting the silent oasis isn't as calming as you might expect.

The room holds the current Guinness World Record as the quietest place on the planet, and companies from all over the world seek out its unique acoustic properties. The walls of the chamber are lined with sound-absorbing baffles that can capture noise and mute it in an instant. This allows companies — both Whirlpool and Harley-Davidson have visited — to test just how noisy their products are without the risk of outside interference.

But while the super-silent oasis is a great testbed for various products, it holds a darker side: silence, it turns out, can put a great strain on the human brain. Researchers at NASA test the room's unique acoustic capabilities on humans rather than hardware. The noiselessness is used to simulate the silence of space — an environment astronauts would be well served to grow accustomed to.

What they've found is that when all outside noise is removed from an enclosure, human hearing will do its best to find something to listen to. In a room where almost 100% of sound is muted, people begin to hear things like their own heartbeat at a greatly amplified volume. As the minutes tick by in absolute quiet, the human mind begins to lose its grip, causing test subjects to hallucinate.

NASA then monitors how the would-be space explorers react, and whether they can get past the very obvious awkwardness of seeing or hearing things that aren't actually there. According to lab officials, the longest anyone has lasted is 45 minutes before being allowed to hear the sweet sounds of planet Earth once again.

In the end, the chamber has proven a valuable scientific tool, just don't plan on renting it for some peace and quiet — it may do more harm than good.

Lives Beyond Books

While watching one of his recent YouTube videos, it's immediately clear that John Green isn't just an author. He's a multimedia darling playing to 1,000-seat auditoriums of screaming fans.

Some of the crowds that showed up for his mostly sold-out, 17-city tour in support of his latest young -adult novel are subscribers to the Vlogbrothers, the video blog Green runs with his brother that draws 7 million viewers per month. Others rank among his 1.17 million Twitter followers.

Many have read his new bittersweet tragi-comedy, The Fault In Our Stars, about two teenagers fighting cancer and falling in love. Since its release earlier this year, the book has received 230 five-star reviews on Amazon.com and made its debut at No.1 on the New York Times chapter book bestseller list.

Few authors have so vocal a following, but Green has a rare combination of talents. A gifted writer who, at 34, has already won two Printz honours (given annually to the best book written for teens in America) and an Edgar Award (from the Mystery Writers of America for the best young adult novel in the genre) for his previous novels, Green has a down-to-earth yet goofy personality that he actively shares with fans in the interest of building community.

Young adult fiction writer John Green

What's notable about John Green isn't the fact that he's so effectively leveraged the Web to build his readership. It's how he's done it - with resonant authenticity.

"When you're writing a novel, you spend four years sitting in your basement and a year waiting for the book to come out and then you get the feedback," the Indianapolis-based author says during a phone interview. "When you do work online, the moment you're finished making it, people start responding to it, which is really fun and allows for a kind of community development that you just can't have in novels."

Not that you can tell from the Vlogbrothers' semi-weekly videos, which are extremely personable, rapid-fire rants on topics ranging from typos to religiosity and the occasional song about Angler fish.

"I'm a very introverted person. Nothing that's happened has changed that," Green says, "but one of the reasons I write for teens is it's a real privilege to have a seat at the tables in the lives of young people when they're figuring out what matters to them. To me, part of having that seat extends beyond the world of books. Teenage readers also have a different relationship with the authors whose work they value than adult readers do. I loved Toni Morrison, but I don't have any desire to follow her on Twitter. I just want to read her books."

That's far from the case with Green's fans, who showed up on his book tour earlier in the year with cakes iced in The Fault In Our Stars frosting and tattoos quoting passages from his bestselling, Printz-winning, 2005 debut, Looking For Alaska. Many of Green's fans showed up with already-signed copies of the new book, 100,000-plus were pre-sold, and individually autographed, before the book's release.

"Teenagers have more intense reading experiences because they've had fewer of them," says Green, adding that as a teenager he wanted to go to New Hampshire and find J.D. Salinger (of Catcher In The Rye fame). "It's like the first time you fall in love. You have a connection to that first person you fell in love with because it was so intense and unprecedented.

Many of Green's novels are about that very subject. Looking For Alaska is about a boy who falls in love with a suicidal girl. His follow-ups, An Abundance Of Katherines in 2006 and Paper Towns in 2008, are, likewise, about boys falling in love with other bewitching and spirited young women.

All of those early novels were failed attempts at writing The Fault In Our Stars, says Green, who first started the story in 2000 but didn't make real headway until 2009, when he met and became close friends with a 16-year-old fan of his books and videos named Esther Earl, who had terminal cancer "and whose humour and empathy and charisma and intelligence was really important to me and found a way into the story."

Green is quick to point out that Ear, who has since died and to whom The Fault In Our Stars is dedicated, is not to be confused with the book's main character, Hazel, who has thyroid cancer. The Fault In Our Stars is the rare young-adult novel in which friendships are forged in a hospital instead of a school, where many "side effects of dying" are handled with heart and a healthy dose of gallows humour. Hazel notes early on: "When given a 20% chance of living five years ... you look around and think ... I gotta outlast four of these ********." Like Hazel, who believes "the funny choice" is the way to tell sad stories, Green, too, decided to go with humour in telling what might otherwise be a story too depressing to read.

"Humour and tragedy coexist everywhere," Green says. "All the sick people I've known were still funny. I wanted to capture the fact that people who are chronically ill or in pain, those people have very difficult lives. It's not a joyous laugh fest, but those people are as alive and human as anyone else and part of being alive is being able to crack jokes."

The older of two brothers, Green grew up in Florida. He studied English and religious studies at Kenyon College in Ohio and, for a time, he was a reviewer for Booklist Magazine in Chicago, specialising in literary fiction, books about Islam, and books about conjoined twins. He is married to a woman known to Green's fans as the Yeti (she's called that by the Vlogbrothers but never appears on camera). The couple have a two-year-old son.

He attributes his comfort with technology to his father who, in 1993, signed up the family or a precursor to AOL called Compuserve. Green was 16 at the time and "had a hard time making friends," he says. But on Compuserve, he became part of a student forum through which he met many people who continue to be his close friends. His seemingly early adoption of technology is only early "relative to other people in publishing. Publishing is not known for its digital innovation," says Green, who has a Facebook page but rarely updates it because he doesn't like the interface.

He does, however, like Twitter, where he says his real readership is closer t 237,000, and, of course, YouTube, where Green and his brother, Hank, first morphed into the Vlogbrothers in 2007, filming and editing their clips themselves. This year, the two will expand their offerings with two new staffed YouTube channels underwritten by Google. Hank is working on a science programme. They'll be creating educational videos about world history, biology and physics for something called Crash Course.

Instagram for Android Released

Instagram for Android has been released, bringing the wildly popular photo filter app to Google’s platform after it swept iOS devices. A free download, Instagram for Android brings numerous custom filters and boarders to your smartphone photography, as well as making sharing with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare far more straightforward.

In the pipeline is Flickr support, Instagram confirms. A timeline feature pulls in photos from your friends, which can be “liked” and commented upon, just as they can do to your own shots.

Both front and back cameras are supported – assuming your device has them – meaning you can also share color-mangled self portraits. Instagram on iOS has been ridiculously successful, with over 27m registered users and “Facebook-style” activity, according to the company.

You can find Instagram for Android in the Play Market, where it’s a free download. You’ll need an Android 2.2 device or above to use it.

Religious Fasting

Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Concerning that from which one fasts, and the period of fasting, a fast may be total or partial. It may be observed unbroken for many uninterrupted days, or be observed only for certain periods during the day, as is the Muslim practice during the holy month of Ramadan. Depending on the tradition, fasting practices may forbid sexual activity as well as food, in addition to refraining from eating certain types or groups of foods; for example, meat may be refrained from.

Fasting for religious and spiritual reasons has been a part of human custom since pre-history. It is mentioned in the Bible, in the Old and New Testament, the Qur'an, the Mahabharata, and the Upanishads. Fasting is also practiced in many other religious traditions and spiritual practices.

Baha’i faith (Nineteen day fast)

In the Baha’i Faith, fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset during the Baha’i month of ‘Ala (March 2 to March 20). Baha’ullah established the guidelines in the Kitáb-i-Aqdas. It is the complete abstaining from both food and drink (including abstaining from smoking). Observing the fast is an individual obligation, and is binding on all Baha’is who have reached the age of maturity, which is fifteen years of age.

Along with obligatory prayer, it is one of the greatest obligations of a Baha’i. The Guardian of the Baha’i Faith, Shoghi Effendi, explains: “It is essentially a period of meditation and prayer, of spiritual recuperation, during which the believer must strive to make the necessary readjustments in his inner life, and to refresh and reinvigorate the spiritual forces latent in his soul. Its significance and purpose are, therefore, fundamentally spiritual in character. Fasting is symbolic, and a reminder of abstinence from selfish and carnal desires.”

Buddhism

Buddhist monks and nuns following the Vinaya rules commonly do not eat each day after the noon meal, though many orders today do not enforce this. This is not considered a fast, but rather a disciplined regime aiding in meditation. Fasting is generally considered by Buddhists as a form of asceticism and as such is rejected as a deviation from the Middle way. However, the Vajrayana practice of Nyung Ne is based on the tantric practice of Chenrezig. It is said that Chenrezig appeared to Gelongma Palmo, an Indian nun who had contracted leprosy and was onthe verge of death. Chenrezig taught her the method of Nyung Ne in which one keeps the eight precepts on the first day, then refrains from both food and water on the second. Although seemingly against the Middle Way, this practice is to experience the negative karma of both oneself and all other sentient beings and, as such, is seen to be of benefit. Other self-inflicted harm is discouraged.

Christianity

The "acceptable fast" is discussed in the biblical Book of Isaiah, chapter 58:3-7, and is discussed metaphorically. In essence, it means to abstain from satisfying hunger or thirst, and any other lustful needs we may yearn for. The blessings gained from this are claimed to be substantial.

Christian denominations that practice this “acceptable fast” often attest to the spiritual principles surrounding fasting and seek to become a testament to those principles. They often cite Jesus, who discussed a particular type of demon as being exorcisable "only by fasting and prayer". The opening chapter of the Book of Daniel, vv. 8-16, describes a partial fast and its effects on the health of its observers.

Fasting is a practice in several Christian denominations or other churches. Other Christian denominations do not practice it, seeing it as a merely external observance, but many individual believers choose to observe fasts at various times at their own behest, and the Lenten fast observed in Anglicanism is a forty day partial fast to commemorate the fast observed by Christ during his temptation in the desert.

Hinduism

Fasting is a very integral part of the Hindu religion. Individuals observe different kinds of fasts based on personal beliefs and local customs. Some are listed below:

Some Hindus fast on certain days of the month such as Ekadasi (the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight) or Purnima (full moon).Certain days of the week are also set aside for fasting depending on personal belief and favorite deity. Thursday fast is very common in Hindu Religion of north India; they could be Varshney, Agarwal or other caste. On Thursday devotees listen to a story before breaking their fast. On the Thursday fast devotees also worship Vrihaspati Mahadeva or Jupiter. They wear yellow clothes and shower yellow flowers. Meals with yellow colour are preferred. Women worship the banana tree and water it. Food items are made with yellow-coloured cow’s ghee. Fasting during religious festivals is also very common.

Common examples are Shivaratri or the 9 days of Navratri (which occurs twice a year in the months of April and October/November during Dussera just before Diwali, as per the Hindu Calendar). Karwa Chauth is perhaps a form of fasting unique to the northern part of India where married women undertake a fast for the well-being, prosperity, and longevity of their husbands. The Fast is broken after the wife views the moon through a sieve after sunset. Methods of fasting also vary widely and cover a broad spectrum. If followed strictly, the person fasting does not partake any food or water from the previous day's sunset until 48 minutes after the following day's sunrise. Fasting can also mean limiting oneself to one meal during the day and/or abstaining from eating certain food types and/or eating only certain food-types. In any case, even if the fasting Hindu is non-vegetarian, he/she is not supposed to eat or even touch any animal products (i.e. meat, eggs) on a day of fasting. And fasting is also mean one whole day (for those people can take) from morning until night of until the next day too, with no food and water, or can breakfast in the evening with water, milk and fruits too.

Islam (Sawm)

In Islam, fasting for a month is an obligatory practice during the holy month of Ramadan, from fajr (dawn), until maghrib (sunset). Muslims are prohibited from eating, drinking, smoking, and engaging in sexual intercourse while fasting. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the Pillars of Islam, and thus one of the most important acts of Islamic worship. By fasting, whether during Ramadan or other times, a Muslim draws closer to their Lord by abandoning the things they enjoy, such as food and drink. This makes the sincerity of their faith and their devotion to God (Arabic: Allah) all the more evident. God says in the Qur'an that fasting was prescribed for those before them (i.e., the Jews and Christians) and that by fasting a Muslim gains 'taqwa', which can be described as the care taken by a person to do everything God has commanded and to keep away from everything that He has forbidden.

Fasting helps prevent many sins and is a shield with which the Muslim protects him/herself from jahannam (hell) Muslims believes that fasting is more than abstaining from food and drink. It also includes abstaining from any falsehood in speech and action, from any ignorant and indecent speech, and from arguing and fighting, and lustful thoughts. Therefore, fasting helps develop good behavior .Fasting also inculcates a sense of fraternity and solidarity, as Muslims feel and experience what their needy and hungry brothers and sisters feel. However, even the poor, needy, and hungry participate in the fast.

Moreover, Ramadan is a month of giving charity and sharing meals to break the fast together. While fasting in the month of Ramadan is considered fard (obligatory), Islam also prescribed certain days for non-obligatory, voluntary fasting, such as: each Monday and Thursday of a week the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month six days in the month of Shawwal (the month following Ramadan)the Day of Arafat (9th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar)the Day of Ashuraa (10th of Muharram in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar), with one more day of fasting before or after it

Judaism (Ta’anit)

Fasting for Jews means completely abstaining from food and drink, including water. Taking medication or even brushing teeth is forbidden on the major fast days of Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av, but permitted on minor fast days. Observant Jews fast on six days of the year. With the exception of Yom Kippur, fasting is never permitted on Shabbat, for the commandment of keeping Shabbat is biblically ordained and overrides the later rabbinically-instituted fast days. Yom Kippur is the only fast day which is explicitly stated in the Torah.

Yom Kippur is considered to be the most important day of the Jewish year and fasting as a means of repentance is mandatory for every Jewish man and boy above the age of bar mitzvah and every Jewish woman and girl above the age of bat mitzvah. It is so vital to fast on this day, that only the very sick and women who have just given birth may be given a dispension from a rabbi. Fasting on Yom Kippur is considered more important than the prayers of this holy day. If one fast, even if one is at home in bed, one is considered as having participated in the full religious service.

In addition to fasting and prayer, Yom Kippur--as the "Sabbath of the Sabbaths" has the same restrictions regarding "work" as the Sabbath. Carrying outside of the home, using electricity, cooking, riding in a car, using the telephone, writing, etc. are all forbidden. No leather shoes are worn on this day. Men wear a white gown over their clothes, symbolic of a burial shroud on this Day of Judgment. Women often wear a large white scarf over their heads and do not put on make-up or jewelry. The aura of the day is serious, humble, sacred and repentant yet happy in the knowledge that sincere repentance brings redemption.

The second major day of fasting is Tisha B'Av, the day nearly 2000 years ago on which the Romans destroyed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the Jews were banished from their homeland. Tisha B'Av ends a period of nine days in which Jews do not participate in happy events, wash clothes, and eat meat except on the Sabbath, cut hair or swim. In general, these nine days and to some extent the entire three weeks before Tisha B'Av are considered a time of danger for Jews.

Historically, this timeframe has been ripe with persecutions and other tragic events. Unlike the fast of Yom Kippur, there are no restrictions on activities, although one should try to avoid doing regular work the first part of the day, sit in a low chair or on the floor, and wear no leather shoes. This is also the day when Orthodox Jews remember the many tragedies which have befallen the Jewish people, including the Holocaust. The atmosphere of this holiday is serious and deeply sad. Both of these holy days is considered major fasts and are observed from sunset to sunset the following day by both men and women. The remaining four fasts are considered minor and fasting is only observed from sunrise to sunset. Men must observe them, and women should observe them, but a rabbi may often give dispersions if the fast represents too much of a hardship to a sick or weak person.

Sikhism

Sikhism is probably the only major organized world religion that does not promote fasting except for medical reasons. The Sikh Gurus discourage the devotee from engaging in this ritual as it is considered to "bring no spiritual benefit to the person". The Sikh Holy Scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib tell us: "Fasting, daily rituals, and austere self-discipline - those who keep the practice of these, are rewarded with less than a shell."(SGGS page 216). So, most Sikhs have never undertaken any kind of fast.

The Hunger Games Blows Past $250 Million while Julia Roberts' Mirror Mirror Cracks

It's officially The Hunger Games' year.

In its second weekend at the box office, the teen-vs.-teen blockbuster became the top-grossing movie of 2012 with an estimated $61.1 million Friday-Sunday that upped its domestic total to a record-fast $251 million.

The news, meanwhile, wasn't nearly as good for Julia Roberts' Mirror Mirror.

The kid-friendly take on Snow White failed to crack $20 million despite showing at more than 3,600 theaters and costing in the neighborhood of $80 million.

Showing on slighty fewer screens, Wrath of the Titans, the weekend's other major new release, grossed $34.2 million.

Mirror Mirror must hope now that families will keep it playing well through spring break—and Kristen Stewart's and Charlize Theron's upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman must trust that audiences have been waiting for the darker take on the fairytale.

Among The Hunger Games' vanquished competition, Wrath of the Titans does—and doesn't—have more to brag about than Mirror MIrror.

The sword-wielding sequel was a shadow of its predecessor, Clash of the Titans, which debuted to $61.2 million in 2010.

Overseas audiences, though, may come to the rescue. By BoxOfficeMojo.com's count, the $150 million film has grossed $112.2 million worldwide.

The Hunger Games' worldwide number, meanwhile, is a bigger, fatter $365 million.

On the domestic front, its 10-day sprint to $250 million was the fastest-ever for a nonsequel, its studio said.

Ticket sales fell 60 percent from its awesome opening weekend, but the film held better than either the final Harry Potter or the last Twilight movie. Here's the complete rundown of the weekend's top movies, per Friday-Sunday domestic estimates as reported by the studios and BoxOfficeMojo.com:

  1. The Hunger Games, $61.1 million
  2. Wrath of the Titans, $34.2 million
  3. Mirror Mirror, $19 million
  4. 21 Jump Street, $15 million
  5. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, $8 million
  6. John Carter, $2 million
  7. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, $1.3 million
  8. Act of Valor, $1 million
  9. A Thousand Words, $915,000
  10. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, $835,000

A Place Where Men Fear Rape by Women.

Gangs of pretty women in Zimbabwe have been raping men to harvest their sperm for use in traditional luck-enhancing 'juju' black magic rituals, according to local media reports.

One local woman, Susan Dhliwayo , claims she pulled her car over recently to pick up a group of male hitchhikers and they refused to get in, as they feared they were going to be raped, the Daily Mail reported.

"Now, men fear women. They said, 'We can't go with you because we don't trust you' ," Dhliwayo, 19, said.

According to reports, victims of the freeway femme fatales are drugged or subdued at gun or knife-point - one man was even compelled to perform at 'snake-point' when his rapists brandished a live snake.
Sophie Nhokwara, Netsai Nhokwara and Rosemary Chakwizira leaving the Harare's Magistrates court in November last year after a pre-trial hearing for attacking male hitchhikers

The male victims are then given a sexual stimulant and forced to have sex continually , occasionally unprotected , before being dumped on the side of the road.

In November, two sisters, their friend and one of their boyfriends were charged in a Harare court for attacking male hitchhikers and collecting their semen.

Sophie Nhokwara, 26, Netsai Nhokwara, 24, and Rosemary Chakwizira, 28, were detained when they were involved in a car accident and police found 31 used condoms in the boot of their car.

They face 17 counts of aggravated indecent assault, as a woman raping a man is not a criminal offense in the country. The three women claimed that they were merely hardworking prostitutes.
